Steps to enrol your child in Foundation (Prep) for the 2024 school year

If your child is starting Foundation (Prep) in 2024, you will be able to apply to enrol your child in a Victorian government primary school from the start of Term 2, 2023 (Monday 24 April 2023).

How do I enrol my child in their first year of primary school:

  1. Use Find my School to locate your designated neighbourhood school (referred to as your local school).

  2. Contact a government primary school to book a school tour or to learn more about the school and the enrolment application process.

  3. Download the Foundation (Prep) enrolment information pack click here

  4. Submit an enrolment application for Foundation (Prep) click here by Friday 28 July 2023

  5. You will be notified of the outcome of your application by Friday 11 August 2023. If you receive an offer of placement, you should accept the offer by Friday 25 August 2023.

  6. Take part in enrolment information and transition sessions during Term 4, 2023.

  7. Your child will start Foundation (Prep) from Tuesday 30 January 2024.

  8. Enrolment applications submitted after 28 July 2023 will be processed by the school as they are received, in accordance with the Department's Placement policy.

Your child has a right to enrol at their local school. Your child’s local school is determined on the basis of their permanent residential address. Visit Find my School to locate your child’s local school. The enrolling in a school page can also help you to confirm your child’s address for enrolment.

Should you be interested in enrolling in our school but do not live in our school zone you can request an enrolment but we cannot confirm the enrolment until after we have enrolled all students that live in our zone first and have determined whether our school has capacity.

If you have any queries or questions about enroling at Sunshine Primary School please send us an email, phone our office on 8311 5700 or call in any school day, between 9:00am and 4:00pm.

Arriving From Overseas

For families arriving from overseas, school entry is determined by the Visa Subclass Number on your child's passport.  Students unable to enrol directly into the school can enrol via the International Education Division.  Please contact them by phone on 03 637 2990, by email on international@education.vic.gov.au or visit their website at www.study.vic.gov.au

Prep Transition Program

Our Prep Transition Program is the beginning of your child's journey to school, where they will have many opportunities to learn about our school and begin settling in. Our extensive transition program aimed at making your child's pathway from kindergarten to school a seamless experience. Our goal is to have students who feel happy, safe and excited about school. We endeavour to make this transition possible for each and every child that begins school at SPS. As each child has a unique set of abilities, needs, and attitudes towards learning this means that the transition to school will be different depending on the individual.

Our formal Transition Sessions for enrolled students are held in November.  During this time the children will be involved in activities that will familiarise them with the classroom setting and school grounds.

Buddy System

At Sunshine Primary we have a 'buddy' system in place. The student buddies are a vital part of our transition program.

The buddy system operates on an informal basis.

The purpose of the buddy system:

  • assists with student transition to primary school
  • develops positive cross-age relationships
  • contributes to a positive and caring school culture
  • contributes to more positive behaviour by providing positive role models
  • develops pro-social values and skills
  • develops responsibility
  • builds self confidence
  • develops empathy
  • promotes inclusion
